Let's create your dream garden: Expert tips for getting started

Designing a garden offers limitless possibilities. At Linden Homes, our properties give you the opportunity to personalise your outdoor space. However, knowing where to begin can feel daunting.

Here is some garden design inspiration to get you started.

Plan your layout

To kick things off, think about what you want from your dream garden and how its layout needs to work to achieve this.

It’s also important to consider the orientation of your garden. Whether it faces north or south will impact your layout choices, such as where to place furniture to enjoy the sunshine.

To decorate your garden, decide whether you aspire to water features, flower beds, or a pergola. You may need extra paving or a tiered design to maximize your space. You can always change some things later, but getting the basics right at the start is key.

Workaround focal points

To maximize the impact of your space, whether you prefer low-maintenance or a wild garden design, you should establish a central focal point.

Focal points can include raised beds, fire pits, a decorative garden wall, or a vegetable patch.

You can use surrounding plants or bright colours to frame your focal points. A vibrant splash of colour against a backdrop of green can be a very effective, contemporary garden design.

Easy garden designs

Choosing a manageable garden design is crucial. We don’t all know how to landscape a garden, so some things might be best left to professionals. However, there are some simple methods to enhance your garden.

  1. A simple border - Defining a garden space can be easily done with a flower border along a fence, wall, or pathway. Once planted it will need minimal maintenance.
  2. Container garden clusters - Create a vibrant feature in small areas by grouping potted plants together. Garden centres offer a wide variety of plants and pots to match any style.
  3. Simple stepping stone path - Adding a pathway through your lawn is a great way to break up big green spaces and create a stylish yet practical feature in your garden. Plus, it can draw the eye to whatever you want to highlight.

Children’s garden design ideas

  1. Beanpole teepee - Create a child-friendly garden by prioritising features that spark their creativity. Easy-to-build bamboo structures combined with fast-growing vines, like runner beans, can make a little hideaway for kids.
  2. Mud kitchen - Set up a basic mud kitchen by picking a muddy spot and adding some old kitchen utensils. This gives kids a designated area to play with mud and water in the garden.
  3. Butterfly garden - Bring some new wildlife to the garden by planting a few flowers like coneflowers and milkweed to attract butterflies. This is not only supporting butterflies but is also fun for children.
